Make the most of your stove!
Last month we took delivery of the Heta ScanLine 820B with Soapstone finish in the showroom. This beautiful stove has the addition of a baking oven which not only adds height but is also a really handy functional little addition!
We hear a lot of our showroom visitors comment on how much they like the baking oven but that they are not sure what they could use it for. So..... here are a few ideas to get you started with getting the most out of your stove (and baking oven).
Let’s start with a simple one! Bread! The Heta ScanLine 820B comes with a handy little recipe guide showing you how to make Heta’s Breakfast Buns.
We won’t stray too far from the bread theme now; why not try a Bruschetta entrée?
All you will need is a wheat baguette cut up into slices, brush it with oil and pop it in the oven until it is crisp. Now the topping is up to you, but we would suggest chopping some tomatoes and red onions along with some basil and arranging them on the top.
An easy snack to make that will keep you ‘toasty’ ;) warm and leave your room smelling great!
Now for something a little trickier but perfect for a dinner party ...... Stuffed chicken breast with pesto and mozzarella wrapped in bacon.
This recipe will serve 4 people .
4 Fresh chicken breast
1 Bunch basil
1 Clove garlic
50g Parmesan cheese
150g Grated cheese
16 slices of bacon
600g of small potatoes with their skin on.
4 Parsley Roots
2-3tsp Dried thyme Salt
Par boil your potatoes in water with salt until they are half cooked.
Prepare your vegetables and sauté they in a pan with oil and seasoning for 5 minutes .
Blend together your garlic, basil and Parmesan slowly adding oil.
Cut your chicken pieces and spread the blended garlic, basil and Parmesan on them.
Close the chicken again and wrap bacon around the whole piece to hold them back together.
Brown the chicken in a frying pan and then place them in a greased dish along with the vegetables and potatoes.
Bake for 40 minutes at 180c
The core temperature of the chicken must be at least 80c.
How about a dessert to finish?
Baked Marzipan apples with cinnamon filling.
50g Chopped almonds
50g Melted Butter
4 tbsp Sugar
Grate the Marzipan and knead it together with the butter.
Chop the almonds and mix them with the marzipan and butter.
Core you apples and fill them with your marzipan and butter mix.
Roll your filled apples in the melted butter and then in a combined mixture of the cinnamon and sugar.
Pop the apples in a greased dish and heat in the oven for approx. 20 minutes at 175c.
Why not finish the dish off with strawberries or blackberries depending on the season and some ice cream.
There are so many things that you can cook using your wood stove with baking oven, this is just the tip of the iceberg! So experiment this winter and make the most of your stove!
You will have all seen the misleading headlines last week that suggest London Mayor has called for a ban on wood burning stoves. We wanted to keep our customers up to speed on what is actually being said and the work industry is doing to tackle air pollution.
The London Mayor’s Office Air Quality Team has contacted HETAS and Woodsure, looking after wood fuel quality. They were clear that the Mayor Sadiq Kahn is not proposing a ban on stoves. He is concerned about the various pollution sources like diesel, brake wear, tyre wear, and particulates from open fires and old stoves. It is his intention to look at some areas of London and consider whether areas e.g. close to schools – may have times when they are zero emissions zones. So for parts of the year, there may be some times when pollution emitting activities are reduced. These things are at consultation stage and no final decisions have been made. HETAS has a product approval system that includes easy ways to identify the cleanest appliances and Woodsure has implemented the “Ready to Burn” dry wood log scheme as scientific studies have found that dryer wood fuel (up to 20% moisture content) reduces environmental impact greatly making stoves and wood-burning a safe, efficient and practical form of heat that can be used whilst being part of the environmental solution rather than being the problem.
Definitely the question that we get asked most frequently is ....... what size woodburner do I need for my room?
There is a fairly simple calculation that is used throughout the stove industry that can give you a rough idea of what size stove you will need.
First measure the length, width and height of your room in metres and multiply the 3 figures together.
e.g. your room measures 8m long x 6m wide x 2.5m high
8 x 6 x 2.5 = 120cu.m
Take this number and divide it by 14.
120cu.m / 14 = 8.57
This means that you will require an 8kW Stove.
As mentioned earlier this is a rough guide and there are many factors that also must come in to play such as the age of the property, what insulation the property has, the size of the windows and if they are double glazed, if there are any other rooms or staircases leading off of the room. All of these and more will influence the heat requirement of the stove.

There has been a lot of information in the press recently with regards to the impact that woodburning and multifuel stoves have on the environment. In light of this I would like to take the time to introduce to you the Elise Range from Stovax.
Designing a fire that essentially redefines what it means to burn cleanly requires a wholly fresh approach, which is why the Stovax Elise range is very different.
Featuring unique airflow dynamics that facilitate highly efficient, state of the art combustion systems, the new Elise range produces magnificent rolling flames and ample warmth, whilst lowering emissions to an absolute minimum. The progressive design makes it not only one of today’s cleanest burning, carbon neutral fires, but also compliant with the forthcoming exacting Ecodesign standards for 2022.
Resulting from Stovax’s over 30 years of British design and engineering, the Elise is a clean, contemporary designed fire range at the pinnacle of clean burning performance.
Every Stovax fire is characterised by a precise balance of efficiency, performance and user control. The Elise is the result of these values being taken to the next level, to create a fire at the forefront of innovation. Utilising a series of advanced plenum chambers coupled with triple air jets, airflow can be instantly adjusted and delivered with precision accuracy to multiple areas of the firebox. This technology facilitates the Elise’s ultra-green, Ecodesign combustion process – reducing emissions to remarkably low amounts, whilst maintaining high levels of efficiency of up to 81%.
The Elise’s eco-friendly design means that both the 540 and 680 models are DEFRA smoke control zone exempt, making them an excellent choice for rural and urban homes alike.
Stovax have always strived to create standout stoves and fires that not only provide superior flame visuals, but also minimise their environmental impact. Their advanced Cleanburn technology is the result of over 30 years of experience and development, with many of their products approved for use in urban environments which are typically DEFRA smoke restricted areas.
But producing DEFRA exempt appliances is only the beginning. New EU Ecodesign regulations are coming into force in 2022 to ensure appliances are friendly to both the environment and our health, paving the way to a truly sustainable future.
With this in mind Stovax have developed the Elise as a highly efficient, greener fire that doesn’t simply meet Ecodesign limits but goes much further – with some models in the range burning so cleanly, emissions are minimised to as little as a fifth of the forthcoming 2022 levels.
The Elise’s advanced combustion system isolates air management in the specially designed plenum chambers in the base of the fire, so that airflow is calibrated precisely – ensuring a far more complete burning process than standard fires and stoves can ever achieve. The result is significantly less flue gases that impact air quality, including Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrous Oxide (NOx), Organic Gaseous Compounds (OGC), and Particulate Matter (PM).
We believe this is the future of solid fuel heating, which is why we have decided to design and develop one of the most ultra-green burning fire ranges – the Elise.
Did you know that the UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe?
The Woodland Trust work tirelessly to plant, protect and restore native woodlands. The trees in these woodlands purify the air that we breathe and are a wonderful place for adults, children and animals to play and relax. Native woods are a habitat for many species such as the doormouse, red squirrel and song thrush.
Mendip Stoves and The Woodland Trust are pleased to anncounce that they will be working in partnership to achieve a richly wooded landscpe in the UK that the public can respect and enjoy.
In order to support the woodland, Mendip Stoves will be contributing £10 to The Woodland Trust for every Mendip Stove purchased. These contrubutions will help protect Britains ancient woodlands and create lasting woodland for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
